About the Committee

The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) is a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council that is dedicated to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women across the world. It focuses on evaluating progress on women’s rights, identifying global challenges and setting international standards that strengthen gender equality. The Commission addresses issues such as women’s participation in decision-making, elimination of gender-based violence, access to education and healthcare and economic empowerment. Each year it meets in a dedicated session where member states review global progress, negotiate policy recommendations and commit to new actions that advance the status of women.

UNCSW offers a platform for delegates to explore social, economic and cultural issues that directly affect women and girls worldwide. Participants represent member states and present their positions on topics such as workplace equality, reproductive health rights, gender-based violence, digital inclusion and representation of women in governance. They draft policy-oriented resolutions, negotiate language, propose action plans and collaborate with other countries to develop solutions that are sensitive to diverse cultural and political contexts. The committee encourages thoughtful debate and highlights the importance of balancing national perspectives with global responsibility.

Delegates learn to address complex social issues while strengthening their empathy and understanding of global inequalities. They improve their research skills by studying national gender policies and evaluating international frameworks. The committee enhances communication, negotiation and resolution writing abilities while encouraging cooperation across varied viewpoints. It also helps participants appreciate the importance of inclusive policymaking and the role of international institutions in advancing equality. Through this experience, students gain confidence and develop a deeper awareness of how global efforts can uplift women and contribute to a more just and equitable world.
