Strengthening International Cooperation to Enhance Maritime Security in Global Waters.
The United Nations General Assembly First Committee, commonly known as DISEC (Disarmament and International Security Committee), is one of the six main committees of the UN General Assembly. It focuses on issues related to global peace, disarmament, international security and threats that challenge stability among nations. DISEC discusses matters such as arms control, nuclear non-proliferation, global weapons stockpiles, regional security conflicts and international cooperation to prevent the spread of weapons. As every UN member state is part of the General Assembly, DISEC is one of the most inclusive platforms where all countries have an equal voice and can present their security concerns. This ensures that the committee reflects diverse geopolitical interests and works toward collective solutions that strengthen global peace.
DISEC becomes a dynamic committee where delegates represent member states and debate pressing global security challenges. Participants draft and propose resolutions, engage in moderated and unmoderated debates and negotiate amendments to build international consensus. They navigate alliances, national interests and global responsibilities while addressing topics such as cyber warfare, missile proliferation, small arms trafficking and peacekeeping operations. The flow of the debate helps participants understand how large multilateral bodies handle complex security issues through dialogue and compromise.
Delegates develop strong research and analytical abilities as they study their country’s security priorities and policy positions. They gain proficiency in public speaking, negotiation and resolution writing while working within international protocols. DISEC encourages critical thinking because participants must consider both the technical and political dimensions of global security. It also teaches the importance of diplomacy and collaboration in addressing threats that no nation can resolve alone. This experience gives students a deeper understanding of international relations and strengthens their confidence in addressing real-world global issues through peaceful and constructive debate.
