State Laws. Local Impact. Democratic Voice.
Deliberation on addressing caste-driven inequalities in Gujarat’s political representation, public services and economic opportunities.
The Gujarat Legislative Assembly (Gujarat Vidhan Sabha) is the unicameral legislative body of the State of Gujarat. The Legislative & Parliamentary Affairs Department of the Government of Gujarat oversees the Assembly’s functioning, working under the framework of India’s Constitution to draft and deliberate state laws. The Assembly is responsible for creating state laws on subjects such as education, public health and local governance. It also examines and approves the state budget which allows it to exercise strong financial oversight. Through questions to ministers, discussions on public issues and various motions, the Assembly holds the state government accountable and ensures that administrative decisions remain transparent and people-oriented.
When recreated in a parliamentary simulation or MUN setting, the Gujarat Legislative Assembly provides an excellent model for understanding how state-level governance works. Participants get the opportunity to draft state-focused bills, introduce them, debate their merits and propose amendments before voting. They also observe how procedures like structured debates and motions guide the functioning of a real legislature. It helps them develop public speaking, persuasion and policy analysis skills as they represent different constituencies and propose solutions to state challenges. It builds awareness about how state governments function and how laws are shaped through discussion and consensus. Students learn the importance of accountability, fiscal responsibility and cooperation while working within democratic procedures. This experience deepens civic understanding and encourages confidence in engaging with real-world governance.
