The Constitution of India, republican in character and federal in structure, embodies the salient features of the parliamentary system. It provides for a Parliament for the Union consisting of the President and the two Houses, namely, the Rajya Sabha (Council of States) and the Lok Sabha (House of the People); a Union Executive, drawn from both the Houses of Parliament and collectively responsible to the Lok Sabha.

The Lok Sabha, India's lower house of Parliament, comprises representatives elected by direct vote based on universal adult suffrage. The Constitution permits up to 550 members: 530 from the States and 20 from Union Territories. Currently, it has 542 elected members. With a tenure of up to five years, the Lok Sabha plays an essential role in creating laws, passing the Union Budget and keeping the government accountable. These processes ensure transparency, responsible governance and active participation in decision-making.

When recreated in a Model United Nations or parliamentary simulation, the functioning of the Lok Sabha provides a dynamic and realistic learning experience. Participants get to draft, introduce, debate, amend and vote on bills which allows them to understand the complete legislative cycle.
